Life In And Around Lake Victoria, Africa. I Have Achieved My Destination!
September 1, 2017 by admin
Almost two years ago, when I started this epic journey to travel around the world for the third time, I designated the gigantic Lake Victoria in Central Eastern Africa as my midway point. It is one of the largest and deepest freshwater bodies in the world. However, I chose it for a different reason. Its name!
If I can get there, as a solo backpacker and hosteler, before my Eightieth Birthday on September 10, 2017, then I will be VICTORIOUS!
Well, I did it. Arriving July 18 in Kampala, Uganda, at the northern shore qualified me and I could almost see the water from my Fat Cat Hostel, where I stayed for three weeks. But traveling to the Banda Resort on the Sesse Islands within the lake, really did the trick. I stayed for one week and then boated to the smaller, airport town of Entebbe on the shoreline. Here, I now live in the very posh Via Via Resort, where I will stay for a month until the end of September. I shall celebrate The Big 80 here among my many new friends.
I cannot get much more Victorious than that, now can I? I have reached the top of the mountain. It’s all downhill from here!
Once that birthday landmark is achieved, I shall travel on towards a new segment of my next two-year journey, South East Asia. Soon, I will begin studying my new travel possibilities. Surely, this will include Madagascar and Sri Lanka and then to Indonesia and Malaysia, for starters. But, for the moment, I’m taking time out for lots of hammock reading and learning how to post and edit my many beautiful photographs….. soon to grace this article when I figure out how. Stuff like that gets lost in the head when you haven’t done it enough. Maybe I can play the age card until I become proficient at it again.
Do I sound a little bit stilted in my writing, as opposed to my old writings? It’s because I’m adapting to my present laptop keyboard. After my old computer died from fall, I bought a new one in Morocco; never noticing that it was a French/Arabic version and the Querty/Zerty stuff was not what I am used to. At first glance, the keyboard looked alright….. but most keys are in startlingly different places. Changing the original French software inside was easy with a stroke of a key to turn it into English. But, finding symbols and letters is still a challenge.
Somehow, it types in the old familiar format if I place my fingers a certain way and then let them type as they are used to doing, without looking at the keys. But, if I peek and try to find a certain letter or punctuation mark, then I am lost. Contractions are harder to create, so I sometimes use the more formal version. How long will I put up with this? If I finally opt for a new one, I’ll have to give this one away in a French or Arabic land. Meanwhile, let’s try to adapt.
