Summertime In New Zealand

It’s a week into the new year of 2013, and I’m enjoying a January summer’s day here in Wellington, New Zealand. I drove the length of the North Island last week with a new friend, Tatiana Terezakis, with whom I’d shared a flat in Auckland. She has a lovely home here that she’s trying to sell and I decided to take advantage of her plan to return, temporarily, to this city she’s lived in for almost a decade.
This is one of the most beautiful and modern cities I’ve found in my world ramblings and for the moment, Wellington’s enormously powerful winds are quiet. If I hadn’t experienced some of their jet-engine quality on the first day or two, I’d probably not have believed them possible. They can push you along the street and make you cling to poles if they hit you right. Even in the summertime, they carry hints of the Antarctica from which they spring. Then, you go and stock up on sweaters, socks and lambswool products. Fortunately, I’ve found enough of that in the local thrift shops and can leave it behind when I take off for Australia, now suffering from some very high temperatures. Naturally, sunscreen is a vital ingredient here in Down Under, as well.
It’s still hard to find enough computer time to do justice to email and blogging. Wi-fi is expensive here and not as abundant so public libraries become the main source of internet time. Even now, the Botanical Garden calls and I must carry on in the execution of my life as a tourist. But, here I am…. living in high style in a great country, far, far from home, having a wonderful time.
So much for all the “Bravery” people give me credit for by traveling alone!
