Wow, Linda! This is really thought provoking. Especially the metaphor about addiction.

Yes, we are addicted to oil and not doing too much to recover from it. We know it's bad for the earth to let the fumes loose, so we build better controls on the cars, but it's not really a fix. Now we have a real problem, a problem that was bound to happen eventually somewhere and probably has, as you point out.

What can we do about the Gulf? It's too late to "make it all better." But I'm sure there are things we can do. But what? Any ideas out there?.
In my mind, the real solution to this and so many other problems is unity - unity of thought, manifested by a desire to respect and love each other and the earth. A unity of thought that will help us to make the hard choices - like doing without, preferring people before things.

We must learn to talk with, perhaps pray with, definitely consult with those who we perceive as being different from us. We must learn to form community whereever we are so we can be problem solvers whereever we are. This oil problem is very big, involving a British Company and our dear USA.

I couldn't help thinking from the beginning about how American Companies have gone abroad for cheap labor and polluted other countries with their toxins. Now it has been done to us!

Thank you for the chance to get this out! Please, Everyone out there, pray for BP, for the Gulf and all those touched by this tragedy. Pray so that you won't hate and remember this is just a small part of a much bigger problem in our world - the lack of unity, love, and respect for all. It represents what happens in the long run when we put material gain ahead of spiritual (human) values .

What a beautiful vision of Kippy's Heaven! She sounds delightful. I know someone just like her and I am touched by what you did for Kippy throughout her life and at graveside. Thank you for sharing such a personal story - very moving.
Warm regards, Pam.

You must have unearthed this looking for Romanian info for me! I enjoyed reading it, and the disco man's inferences (can't wait to read why) reminded me of the time I was assumed to be a hooker back in the late 50's returning from Cuba on the ferry. I had a purse with a shoulder strap. Our Cuban friend Sonia later told me that was a kind of code that hookers used to identify themselves! And of course, I was traveling alone. So I'm curious to see if you blundered into that kind of misunderstanding!

I think we have to be a Drill Sargent at times, but also a loving, kindly teacher who has patience with our own poor selves at times.
The basic laws of God are known to many of us and they are our guides and protect us (often from ourselves!) I believe that spiritually we can all reach out to this Unknowable Essence and receive guidance. It often comes through people, books, and all sorts of other places.
I like the idea of the school, but Boot Camp is also a powerful analogy, Linda! Thank you, friend.

Hello, Linda.
We were lunch partners at the Women of Influence Luncheon featuring Elizabeth Gilbert. I have thought of you often but I inadvertently misplaced your card and had to wait for your book to arrive to know your blog address.

Your description of the luncheon and Ms. Gilbert's presentation to us is fabulous and right on the mark. I also find it humorous that fate paired the two of us. You - the adventurous world traveler - and me who was atwitter about getting from St. Petersburg to Tampa for this great event.

I must say that I thoroughly enjoyed both - seeing Ms. Gilbert and meeting you. I look forward to reading your book - and if you have a moment, maybe we could lunch again. Thank you for being a part of a delightful and joyful day.

Sincerely, Jimmie P. Day

I enjoy your blog very much. I would be happy to contribute to your planned book on what it feels like to travel at an advanced age. I too have travelled mostly alone, for some 40 years or so. Unlike you, though, I am not very good about keeping up my blog. I can send you a list of my publications if you would like.
